3 Summer Programs for High School Students
3 Summer Programs for High School Students Hanging out by the water and spending time with friendsas the high school year comes to a close, summertime fun is all thats on most students minds. Summer is a great time to relax and refresh for the next school year. Its also an excellent opportunity, however, for high school students to advance their learning. With more and more colleges paying attention to how high school students spend their summers, it can benefit students to dedicate at least a portion of these months to hitting the books. Studying at home can be challenging during the summer. Luckily, many learning programs exist for high school students who want to advance their knowledge during the summer months. These programs include pre-college immersion programs, specialized summer immersion programs, and study abroad opportunities. Aside from preparing students for their high school curricula, programs such as these look great on college applications. If youre a high school student looking to get ahead this summer, here are three high school summer programs to enrich your learning: Summer program #1: Pre-college immersion A summer pre-college program gives high school students the opportunity to take a college-level course or courses. These programs, which can last up to several weeks, provide high school students with a taste of the college experience, including what it feels like to take all or a portion of a college-level class. Students can participate in these programs at both local colleges and colleges away from home. Students who go away to a school often live on campus for the duration of the program. High school students planning to take college-level Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses can especially benefit from these immersion programs, because AP and IB courses are on the same level as college courses. High school students entering their senior year can similarly use these programs to prepare for higher-level courses and their associated workload. Some of the institutions hosting summer pre-college programs that offer a wide variety of academic options include: Emory University, the University of Michigan and Carnegie Mellon University. Some pre-college programs also offer college credit or reduced tuition for in-state students. [RELATED: 3 Questions to Ask Your Guidance Counselor About College] Summer program #2: specialized immersion Several specialized summer-long academic programs are available for high school students as well. This includes Mathcamp, a five-week summer immersion program for high school students who are gifted in math. Students who participate can take college courses in math at the undergraduate, and even graduate, level. Students also get the opportunity to study with internationally renowned mathematics researchers, and to make friends with and learn from students from all over the world. The camp is held at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. Other specialized summer programs available to high school students include Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program, which is focused on teaching young women how to build code and software, and LaunchX, for students interested in learning about entrepreneurship. Research what programs may be available that focus on your particular talents and interests. Dont be afraid to look into options that arent local, as many offer lodging and scholarship opportunities. [RELATED: 5 Myths (and Realities) About Studying Abroad] Summer program #3: study abroad The Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE) is the U.S.s oldest and largest nonprofit study abroad and intercultural exchange organization. It invites high school students interested in expanding their academic knowledge to do so while traveling overseas. CIEE offers several kinds of programs for students to take advantage of, including: CIEEs language and culture program immerses students in an education on the language, culture, and history related to a certain place. CIEEs leadership and service program gives students a more hands-on opportunity to gain knowledge about global issues, such as the environment and childrens rights, while giving back. CIEEs global discovery program gives students a chance to study a specialized field of their choice, such as marine science or filmmaking. The major benefit to studying abroad is getting out of your comfort zone. In another country, most likely youll be challenged to cope with another language, new foods, and a culture different than your own. This can make the learning process more challenging, but also more rewarding and memorable. Youre also likely to meet new friends from all over the world. [RELATED: How to Make the Most of Your Gap Year] When searching for summer programs, identify your interests and explore all of the options available to you. There are many ways that you can take your skillset and participate in a summer learning program that will simultaneously enhance your college admissions resume and expand your knowledge. Some features that makes learning experiences even smoother by TutorPace
Some features that makes learning experiences even smoother by TutorPace Every subject has its own kind of pros and cons. Recently I read in a newspaper that students of today are opting more for commerce subjects than science. As per their logic they feel science to be very dull and bring subject. They more feel that it does not provide you with different scope to study further. Only few selected courses and professions are bound under science stream. Boredom accompanies them are a certain point of time. Todayâs young generation have opted for commerce as their further subject. Many intelligent students have left science stream after their class ten examinations. In the higher education they have opted for commerce. Economics can be said to be an interesting subject Today one of the prime subjects of commerce is in great demand and that is economics. Economics is one of the most interesting subjects according to me and every single thing comes with logic. It provides you a hint of mathematics as well and you can compare the definitions and justifications it provides you for every single topic. In higher classes the subject is divided into two major parts and that is macro and micro economics. Both the parts are important and thus it helps a student to know more about the subject. The subject can be interesting but at higher level it is much difficult to cope up with the subject without any proper help. You need to have guidance beside you if you want in-depth knowledge of the subject. Private tutors are available who can help you with the subject, but the availability of good private teachers is now a day not available with ease. People are much into professionalism and thus it has hampered their teaching profession as well. They do not want to devote their entire time in one subject entirely and super fast method is adapted by them for faster covering of all the topics. Many students are not able to get what exactly the teacher is teaching them. They are not familiar with the subject and thus it brings difficulties to their life to get into the subject. Economics can be learnt with online tutors In such a crisis when you do not know what to do and how to complete the subject then you have take help from online tutors. Yes online tutors also help you to know the different dimensions of the subject. The subject becomes easy for you after you get that help which is desired by every student to understand the subject better. The process may be new but it is gaining popularity with the passage of time. People and students as well like the concept and thus they are making it more and more familiar. The online tutoring facility has various types of benefits that can be shared here so that the ones who are reading the entire blog can know what advantages they will encounter, if they enroll themselves in any of the online tutoring courses. Features of online tutoring courses Online courses are found very rare and among them only few institutes make it a point to provide you with such types of features. A good institute will only help you in this certain way. A good institute has some of the expert teachers. The teachers are appointed on the basis of interview which is tough and thus they have to crack the interview in order to get the chance of being an online teacher. The teachers involved in any of the online institute have fair knowledge about the subject and can go deep into the subject to teach the student with much better prospects. Online teachers first tracks down the weakness and the good points of a student and then plan a strategy to teach the student. This helps any weak student also to know the subject better and the teacher also can guide the student in a much better way. The availability of the teachers is all round the clock. Yes, you heard it right. The teachers are always available for the students. It depends on the student as how they want to take up the classes. They can attend the classes whenever they want and as per their convenience. This is one of the biggest facilities that a student can get from his or her teacher. Having a teacher all round the clock is not that easy for anyone. Online tutors provide you with this. The teachers present at these institutes not only teach the subject but also performs some other kind of work as well. They help the students to conduct their various types of assignments and projects assigned to them. This is a great relief for any student as it saves much of your time while performing the activity. The home works can also be helped by the teachers in many cases. What if you have an individual teacher beside you all round the clock who will help you and only you? Think about it and you will feel that you got something very good and great. See, this type of facility is also provided by online tutoring institutes. The institutes help each student by providing a single teacher for them who will help them and only them. This brings in a sense of self confidence among them and thus it helps in making the student get rid of all the problems that they have. Exponential Equations
Exponential Equations Exponential equations are basically the tool which is helpful in evaluating the values of unknown variables which are generally in powers. This tool is helpful in evaluating the exponential equations either by comparison method or by taking the logarithmic function in both sides of the equation. This tool eases the calculation steps and hence it easily evaluates the value of unknown variable in exponent or we can say in power. The above concept can be better clarified by taking the suitable examples and the examples are shown below. In this case, for better understanding we will take both the cases that is one of comparison in case of same base and logarithmic method in case of different base. Question 1:- Find x if 3^ (4x) = 27^ (x+1) Solution 1:- Given 3^ (4x) = 27 ^ (x+1) This further implies, 3 ^ (4x) = 3^ (3x+3) Since bases are equal on both sides, it means that its power must also be same. Therefore, 4x = 3x + 3 On solving, we get 4x 3x = 3 Hence x = 3 Question 2:- Find x if 5^x = 10 Solution 2:-Given 5^ x = 10 Since bases are not same, so in this case we need to apply log both sides, Therefore log 5^x = log 10 So x log 5 = log 10 Therefore, x = log 10/log5 By writing down the values of log 10 and log 5, we can easily evaluate the actual value of x.
How my trips to Iceland have enhanced my tutoring
How my trips to Iceland have enhanced my tutoring Following his trips to Iceland every summer, Chemistry tutor Andrew M has been able to imbue his lessons with fantastic examples and anecdotes from his time there. Here, Andrew recounts his trips, discusses how it has benefited his tutoring, and, most importantly, shows how he has used his experience in Iceland to engage students: Students perform better at subjects they enjoy and have a genuine interest in. That is a well-known fact. However, one subject in particular does seem to have a problem stoking the imagination of its students: Science. âWhy are we studying this?â âWhat relevance does this have for me?â âThis is boring!â These are all questions science teachers dread to hear. Classroom teachers can often turn to the classic classroom demonstration: alkali metals in a water bath to watch it fizz and pop, ester synthesis to smell the fruity aroma. Students want to see science, touch it, hold it their hands! From personal experience, these demos do make a differenceâ¦for some. But what can the science home tutor do to spark an interest in the subject? Iceland, the global science class room 3 years ago, I took a summer job leading large groups of students on scientific tours around Iceland. As well as exploring all 4 corners of this mystical land, I have had the honour of meeting the president of Iceland, NASA scientists and even Barack Obamaâs Chief Science Advisor, Harvard physicist John P. Holdren. Nature really has had a field day with the so called âland of fire and iceâ. The science behind its awe-inspiring landscapes has provided the perfect educational resource to rouse an interest from my home tuition students. Therefore, a quick anecdote, a video clip or even a basalt rock sample to supplement the curriculum teaching really does work wonders! Engaging students through experiences For example, take climate change. This is such a hot topic but seems to be taught in an unnecessarily dry way. The greenhouse effect, carbon dioxide, rising global temperatures â" you can just imagine a student flicking to the next page of the textbook and yawning. However, show them a clip you took of a gigantic glacier melting in front of your eyes, the roar as a huge chunk of brilliant blue ice tears away and crashes into the sea, and the questions will come flooding in: âWhy is that happening? How big is the largest glacier, why is the ice blue?â To answer these questions the tutor must talk of hydrogen bonding, ideal gas laws, the vibration of molecules and refraction. âBy the way did you know Iceland, a country just outside the arctic circle, grows all its own coffee, bananas and tomatoes?â Cue the explanation of green houses and geothermic activity. Linking in topics In essence, we are covering a lot of GCSE content, and dare I say, enjoying doing so! I could go on and on about the Northern Lights, geothermal power stations, bubbling sulphur mud pots, exploding geysers, tectonic platesâ¦the list is endless. But all of these can be linked to what the student has learned in class and give context to otherwise abstract concepts. I once took a sample of the ash produced by the infamous 2010 volcanic eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull to a student who hated science with a passion. As soon as I explained what this strange dark power was, his eyes lit up. âThis is the stuff that stopped all the planes?â he asked. That lesson we covered kinetic, thermal and mechanical energy. That same student magically seemed to lose his hatred for science and even persuaded his parents to take a short family holiday to Reykjavik. There has been quite a lot of talk recently about the decline in the studying of science by young people. For me, the solution is simple: take them to Iceland! Let them see science, touch it, taste it and smell it! Andrew M is one of our top Chemistry tutors on Tutorfair. An experienced tutor and teacher, in the summer he also leads science-based tutors around Iceland. You can find out more about him and contact him by visiting his Tutorfair profile.

With the 2010 season set to begin, the partnership recognizes the academic requirements surrounding the main goal of most CYA players - a scholarship from an elite college. Tier 1 AAA Hockey Academics It can be difficult to maintain proper focus on academics when playing a sport at an elite level â" Still, AAA hockey players generally have a singular focus â" obtaining a college scholarship. This always requires a minimum ACT score, but many colleges, including all Ivy League schools and Northwestern University, actually require scholarship athletes to meet the same, rigorous academic standards (i.e., grades and test scores) as general applicants. In addition, the jump many CYA players make after Midget AAA hockey can obscure the importance of academics. For most players, the next step towards a college scholarship is not college itself, but Junior hockey. If their time in Juniors goes well, it is 2-3 years later that many players finally enter college on scholarship. However, the academic performance required to obtain a college scholarship is not the issue that some whoâve been involved in elite youth hockey view as most important. Itâs the question of what happens if the scholarship doesnât eventually come. The issue is that, even for the top players in Midget AAA hockey, there ultimately arenât that many scholarships to go around after Juniors. Some players will need to fall back purely on academics to gain admission into their college of choice. Furthermore, some of the best non-scholarship college âclubâ hockey teams, which do provide a level of hockey that can be similar to Midget AAA, Junior B or A, or even Division III (e.g., like Indiana or Illinois in the Big Ten), have relatively stringent admissions criteria.
